I’m a true Floridian. I was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area, but I have yet to really travel my home state. I knew about the Florida Everglades, but I hadn’t yet experienced them. This all changed with a trip to the Everglades Holiday Park in Ft. Lauderdale. Since I was heading to nearby Miami, I knew we had to stop in and take an airboat trip through the swamp!
An airboat tour through the Everglades is necessary if you’re staying in the area. It’s a classic family activity that is surprisingly not too warm. The first thing I want to say is that the airboats were covered, there was a nice breeze, and there were zero bugs. For some reason I had assumed that a swamp would bring nasty bugs, but I was quite comfortable the entire day! Everglades Holiday Park was just recently voted the #1 theme park in South Florida in the 2014 WPLG-Miami “Top Ten” competition, and it’s easy to see why.
We came through on a Sunday afternoon, and it was busy. The admissions desk was well-managed, and it was clear when and where you would board your boat. Trips left every twenty minutes, and you were assigned a boat based on when you checked in. There was a place to order food and drinks, along with a gift shop.
While photos can tell the story about the Florida Everglades, this is one of those trips that needs video! My husband recently purchased a Go Pro for adventures like this. This was the first chance he was able to use it out and about.
We were on serious alligator patrol on our boat. We also saw flowers, birds, trees, and tons of things that were similar to lily pads. They are not though. I wish I could remember what they were called!
If you’re in south Florida, add a trip to the Everglades Holiday Park! It’s close to the highway so it was an easy place to stop. Everglades Holiday Park is home to the Gator Boys of Animal Planet fame. Most episodes are filmed right in this park! There’s a good chance that while you’re visiting, you’ll see the Gator Boys filming. You might even get to meet one of the stars of the show!
